Water reading 101: seams, lanes, and structure

Technique · 7 min read

Learn to spot holding water fast: where fish rest, feed, and stay safe — plus where to cast first.

Look for soft water next to fast water. The boundary (seam) is a feeding lane with less effort for the fish.

Structure matters: undercut banks, boulders, and submerged wood create shelter and break the current.

Start downstream and approach quietly. Avoid throwing shadows and keep low when the water is clear.

Fish the closest water first. Trout near your feet can spook the whole run if you wade too quickly.

Use your drift as feedback: if your fly drags, mend sooner or shorten line to regain control.

Keep it ethical: respect access rules, handle fish gently, and leave the water better than you found it.
